Material Culture

Material Culture Traveling the world is one of my favorite pastimes; as a result, I’m always drawn to culturally diverse furniture, rugs, and home accent pieces. They remind me of far away lands, some that I’ve seen and some I wish to visit. Tucked away in an offbeat section of the city, the journey within Material Culture begins before even stepping foot into the huge 2-story warehouse. Various pottery pieces, flowers and a wooden canoe trickle out of the doorway as if to lead the way. I even got a warm welcome from the resident pooch, Smokey.

Once indoors, there is so much to see and experience. Jazz is playing in the background, colorful Indian Saris drape the interior, and the slight smell of incense fills the air. There are a large number of furniture pieces displayed throughout, many armoires, tables, and shelves that you can browse through in the vast open space. You’ll stumble upon unique pottery, artistic pieces and architectural items from beginning to end. The staff is always friendly and helpful in answering any questions about the objects, how they’re made and where they come from. Material Culture offers a limitless selection of handmade rugs displayed in the spacious sun-filled area on the 2nd floor, along with a large section of varied clearance items.

The only thing missing is more petite items and accent pieces. They sometimes have jewelry or small goods, but choice is limited at times.

If you don’t have your next trip planned, but need to get away, visit Material Culture, and maybe even pick up a unique object to beautify your space.

Jones Restaurant

Jones RestaurantNothing beats Grandma’s or Mom’s home cooking, but Jones is the next best thing. Stephen Starr is a restaurateur genius that has taken over Philadelphia with numerous ultra chic and trendy themed restaurants - all with style and food that never disappoints. Each restaurant is an experience that transfers you into another world. Their atmospheres are all so different, but have all become hot spots in the city.

Jones offers “American style comfort food”. When you step inside, memories of being at Grandma’s house for a big hearty meal are brought back (only the shag carpet has an updated modern twist). Jones exudes a very old school, yet modern, warm and cozy vibe. It has a retro inspired decor (a la Brady Bunch), green vinyl seating, swivel bar chairs, an inviting fireplace, funky lighting and stacked stonewalls.

Among other items, Jones offers some of Mom’s best staples and food that will warm your soul. Entrees include chicken noodle soup, grilled cheese, meatloaf with potatoes and chicken and dumplings. Iceberg lettuce with Russian dressing, tator tots and deviled eggs are available as sides. They even have a full “Thanksgiving dinner” with all the trimmings and weekend brunch that would make any Mom proud.

The bar, specialty drinks and varied DJ’s add to the ambiance and nightlife scene at Jones, making it popular for more than just the cuisine.

When you’re missing home and want to reminisce about your childhood, stop by Jones for a hot bowl of their delicious baked macaroni and cheese, it truly is comforting.

MJM Designer Shoes

MJM ShoesWhat can I say, like most girls, I always love a new pair of shoes. I think it started with a pair of ultra cute sneakers my parents bought me as a child. It didn’t matter where I was - I refused to take them off!

Unlike Carrie Bradshaw, I can’t afford an entire collection of Monolo’s just yet. But, for an endless selection for girls on a budget, I found paradise at MJM Designer Shoes, located just 15 minutes outside of the city.

MJM has infinite rows, upon rows of shoes in every style and for any occasion (as if a big event is necessary). Franco Sarto and Nine West have been some favorites I found at half the price. On an extra lucky day, you can even find designer names such as Coach, Gucci and D&G. They restock everyday and the staff leaves you to browse the aisles at your own pace, to try on every shoe that catches your eye.

Prices generally range from $25-$125, but be sure to check out their clearance section for even bigger steals. MJM also has locations in other fashionable areas, including CA, NJ and NY.

When I need a new pair of kitten heels to either celebrate or boost my spirits, MJM is my hidden heaven…for those of us that can never have too many shoes.

Tip: MJM is one shop the man in your life won’t mind tagging along for, they have a great men’s selection as well!
