Continental Midtown

Continental Midtown I’m honestly not a Stephen Starr groupie (well maybe a little), but I must admit, the man has done it again. The original Continental restaurant is still one of my favorites, but the newer Midtown version brings a whole new energy.

The menu and vibe is similar, but there’s purely more fun to be had. Visually, the new space is remarkable. It’s multilevel and there is something innovative to admire every place you look. Along with outdoor street-side tables, there are two interior floors and a plush roof deck. Choose to sit in comfy turquoise car booths or wicker chairs that suspend from the ceiling, there are even vibrant animal seats in the upstairs lounge. Colorful globe lights seem to burst from above and cool lounge or sometimes 80’s music fills the air. The noise and movement of the patrons just adds to the vibrancy of this restaurant. Waiters are casual in striped shirts, always friendly and laidback. It’s an interesting and modern, yet relaxing place to dine.

Continental is best known as a martini bar, so be sure to try one of the many flavors they offer. The food won’t disappoint either and there’s something on the menu for everyone. Personally, I can’t stop ordering the crispy calamari salad (with feta on the side) and crispy shoestring fries; they’re both just too delicious! Best of all, their prices are very reasonable and portions are generous enough to share. It’s also a terrific spot for brunch, always an enjoyable and relaxing way to ease into the day.

Continental Midtown provides a unique dining experience in the city, a casual, yet entertaining restaurant, with visuals, drinks and cuisine that are pleasing to all five senses. Spot the big olive out front and you’ll know you’re there.

Tip: You’ll realize this quickly on your own, but the bathroom mirrors are actually 2-ways, so stick to washing your hands and applying a quick coat of lip-gloss, as you never know who’s watching from the other side!

Rittenhouse Square

Rittenhouse SquareSpending a Sunday in the park may sound very cliche, but it really is one of my favorite ways to slow down and pass some time.

Rittenhouse Square is a little slice of heaven, a peaceful place to relax and unwind smack dab in the center of this bustling city. There have been times where I’ve heard nothing but birds chirp, and as if just for me, the street noise seemed to silence for a few moments.

There are numerous city parks to enjoy, but Rittenhouse still seems to be the most popular, it’s centrally located and quite active at times. Several paths lead to the center; walkways are lined with benches and trees are scattered throughout. The square is a central gathering and meeting spot that offers a real sense of community.

This park can be a great place to watch others or just escape into your own world. I’ve seen everything from people sipping coffee, sun bathing or exercising, doing yoga, to taking pictures, children playing, and dogs (even a few cats) being walked. Some people bring their laptops or a good book and rest upon a blanket in the grass. Others add to the liveliness by feeding the pigeons, playing instruments or painting a canvas.

Restaurants, stores and outdoor cafes line the exterior. There are also several festivals, art shows and similar events, held in the park throughout the year.

Be sure to stroll through during the wintertime as well, hundreds of colorful gumdrop lights are strewn amid the trees, it’s such a beautiful and romantic sight. The child in me has been tempted to dance and twirl around underneath those glimmering lights, maybe this year I actually will.

Rittenhouse Square is a breathe of fresh air, a refuge from the frenzied pace, on days when the city sometimes becomes overwhelming. There’s something about the beauty of nature amidst an occasionally crazy, hectic manmade world that reminds me to take a step back, appreciate life and just be.

Richard Nicholas Hair Studio

Richard Nicholas Hair StudioI only recall one traumatizing haircut in my life, back when the Heather Locklear “feathered” look was the trend. I was bitter, cried and wore a hat for days! Fortunately, I’ve recovered and am now a girl that easily tires of having the same look. Presently, I’m a very bold and oh-so-sassy shade of red.

Richard Nicholas has been my trusted salon for years. The studio is 2-floors of modern, sleek and streamlined design (much like their hair). The color palette is grey, silver and black with an occasional pop of colorful fresh-cut flowers. There are spotlights, tiled walls, mirrors, televisions and silver fans throughout. Typically, the music playing is soothing, yet upbeat lounge.

In addition to the cool, urban decor, what makes this family-run salon so attractive truly is the staff. Instantly, their energy is welcoming and pleasant and you’ll quickly realize their professionalism and credentials as well. Richard Nicholas provides that perfect mix of modern design, without feeling frigid and an ease in knowing you’ll get an amazing haircut. The salon attracts a varied clientele and prices are the same no matter what length your hair.

Owner, Nick Berardi, is a master of the art, his precision is impeccable and cuts are like no other. Joe Matteo is simply a color genius. I always let him decide what we’ll do next and love the reveal of his creations. Watching them work is mesmerizing, their perfectionism is something I truly appreciate, especially when it comes to my hair.

Richard Nicholas is everything a salon experience should be, an enjoyable, relaxing atmosphere, great conversation, and most importantly, an amazing new head of hair. I always leave ready to hit the town and I know it’s a skillful haircut when people are still complementing me long after I’m overdue for a new one. Call Helen to make an appointment today and get ready for a brand new fabulous you!

Tip: they offer hours on Sunday and Monday and services are currently 20% off those days
