Aveda Store - Liberty Place

Aveda Store - Liberty Place The tempting aroma is always first to lure me in, but Aveda’s pampering service and luxurious, yet earth-friendly products are what keep me returning.

You’ll notice throughout your visit to the store that customer service is key. From being promptly greeted with an offering of tea to a hand massage, the staff is reliably courteous and helpful. The store itself is beautiful, with streamlined bottles and thoughtful displays. The organic feel within the store artistically reflects the product within the bottles and their mission as a company.

Aveda’s packaging not only looks good, but their line is equally organic and star quality indulgent. They carry everything from hair care and styling products, to skincare, makeup and perfume - they even have a dedicated men’s line. Aveda is so much more than fabulous merchandise; they’re committed to protecting the environment, not only through their ingredients and products, but also through their involvement in various programs and campaigns. They provide the perfect balance between nurturing your self and the environment. Not only will you look great and smell yummy on the outside, supporting a caring company and the earth does wonders for the spirit as well.

There are also several Aveda institute locations that provide education for those entering the hair and skincare fields. Best of all, they’re global, so see their website for one near you. Tip: Aveda institutes also offer discount services for girls on a budget.

Borgata Hotel, Casino & Spa

Borgata Hotel, Casino & Spa Unfortunately for us east coast girls, Las Vegas is a significant flight and time change away. Luckily, Atlantic City, the next best thing, is close enough to satisfy anyone’s casino craving (at least until the next desert vacation is booked).

AC has always had that late night, borderline seedy reputation that seems to follow casinos, nevertheless a crazy, fun time is always guaranteed! Borgata, the area’s newest casino, has raised the bar on the level of class and sophistication. One can’t miss the bright neon purple structure in the skyline, beautiful both inside and out.

Their expansive lobby, filled with oversized candy-like, colorful glass sculptures, is just the beginning. With a large casino, along with numerous restaurants, bars, and dance club, they offer a varied selection to choose from. For those that are not avid gamblers, there is also plenty of shopping, and a spa for those much-needed pampering moments. High energy is in the air, everywhere from the casino floor to the nightlife.

What I like best about Borgata is how comfortable and understated the rooms are. Most casino decor is very flashy to say the least, but not here. Even though not much time is usually spent in the room, after a long night of partying, gambling and the sensory overload that casinos often bring, a relaxed place to lay ones head is vital. With clean lines, rooms are subdued and understated. The color palette is warm, full of textured caramels and greens. Beds are crisp with bright white linens and easy to fall into, unassuming elegance and comfort. All the details were thought of, even down to their catchy door tags, stating “tied up” or “tidy up”.

Next time you need a mini vacation, try your luck at the Borgata, odds for a memorable time are undeniably in your favor!

Sugarcube

Sugarcube

Primarily housing upscale vintage pieces, tiny Sugarcube always carries a strong selection. With everything from jackets, pants and dresses, to shoes, handbags, and accessories, sometimes the hardest thing is just choosing which item I love the most. All well preserved with a feminine flair, it’s nearly impossible to decipher which pieces are vintage versus new labels. Clearly, Sugarcube is discriminating (and fabulous) when it comes to choosing what they’ll sell.

Sugarcube offers more upscale vintage, but worth the price for essential, well-structured pieces to mix into your current wardrobe.

The store itself is minimal, showcasing the clothing beautifully. Light colored walls are lined with racks of perfectly hung special pieces, hardwood floors with a touch of industrial in the silver racks, gun shaped flower vases and unique lighting fixtures. True to vintage clothing, there are touches of originality and unexpected blended within the space as well.

Besides all Sugarcube has to offer, with its endearing name, how can one not adore it?

AIA Bookstore & Design Center

AIA Bookstore & Design Center Remember how George Costanza continually longed to be known as Art Vandelay, the successful architect? If only he had been aware of AIA Bookstore & Design Center, then he may have easily fulfilled his designer’s dream.

AIA, owned and run by the Philadelphia chapter of the American Institute of Architects, is the city’s premier store for all things design related.

They house a countless number of books on every style of architecture and design under the sun, including literature on various cities, history and styles of architecture, interior design, graphics and more. If they don’t carry a book you’re looking for, they’ll do their best to find it. For both the professional and novice, there is something here for every skill level.

AIA carries much more than books. Their stock includes assorted household items (with a design edge of course), interesting games, colorful journals, modern home decor, greeting cards, calendars, jewelry, even silly items like cell phone citations (for those that forget we can hear their conversation). AIA also has a large children’s section full of toys, games and books. This store is consistently great for distinctive hostess or housewarming gifts. Be sure to browse during the holidays when they dedicate the lower level to holiday delights, ornaments, cards, wrapping and everything else needed to get into the spirit.

Tip: Inquire about their discounts for AIA members or their frequent buyer card for the rest of us that are also just wishing to be a Vandelay.
